How to extend the lifespan of your red contra-angles? 

In a red contra-angle, the entire kinematic chain is made up of gears, from the input of the contra-angle to its output (the bur). The red contra-angle increases the speed generated by the micro-motor, generally by a factor of 5 (one turn at input, five at output). This means that a micro-motor running at 40,000 rpm causes the bur of a red contra-angle to rotate at 200,000 rpm, i.e. more than 3,300 turns per second. This is absolutely colossal.

To put this in perspective, this means that in a single second, the bur rotates more than 3,300 times…

Regarding lubrication

Unlike a car engine, a contra-angle has no oil reservoir. It is therefore necessary to continuously provide the necessary lubrication in order to reduce metal-on-metal friction, and thus avoid overheating, tearing of material from ball bearings, gears… which signal the beginning of the end for the contra-angle.

If a greasy film does not coat the moving parts (gears / bearing balls), the materials will heat up, and metal will be torn away. The bearings will develop play, as will the gears, and they will become noisy. The bur will no longer be held in its axis due to the play in the bearings. At this speed, this will cause vibrations, and may even lead to the bearing exploding with the micro-balls scattering, or more commonly, broken gear teeth. That's it — the contra-angle is broken!

It is therefore very important to provide the necessary lubrication for the proper functioning of the equipment at each use, or in practice between each patient/sterilisation cycle, as there is no oil reservoir in the contra-angle.

We believe that for fast-rotating instruments, spray-can lubrication is preferable to automated machine lubrication. At a minimum, before autoclave sterilisation, automated lubrication should be supplemented with a spray-can lubricant injection. Lubricate from the base of the equipment until the lubricant emerges from the head of the instrument.

If, when the product is ejected through the head, the lubricant comes out black or dark in colour, continue injecting until the product comes out pure/clear. This will clean away any excess lubricant that has heated up during use. Once this is done, add a little lubricant into the head through the bur insertion port. You will thus have the assurance of perfect lubrication.

The problem with automated lubricators is that they are perfect in theory, but in practice, if the lubricant is not correctly distributed throughout the entire kinematic chain, you will have a lubrication failure leading to rapid deterioration of the instrument.

Regarding the use of equipment

While lubrication is important, it only slows down the wear of the equipment and materials. Since there is movement, there is friction, and therefore wear. In order to reduce this wear, we believe there are two key points to observe:

• Speed: the slower the equipment rotates, the less quickly it will wear.
• The force applied: the less pressure you apply to the bur, the less the gears will wear.

Of course, equipment is made to be used, but for example, using a micro-motor at 25,000–30,000 rpm rather than at its maximum speed will considerably extend the lifespan of the contra-angle.

Likewise, it is important to work with unworn burs. If the bur cuts well, you will be able to lower the motor speed and apply less force when cutting. This can double the lifespan of the equipment. It should not be forgotten that a lower-quality bur, but new, will always be more effective than a premium brand bur that is worn.

Our advice: use inexpensive burs, but new or in perfect condition, rather than making expensive burs last when they are worn, as they ultimately perform worse than low-cost burs.
