Apex Locator: An essential tool for endodontics

The apex locator is an essential electronic instrument in endodontics that enables the working length of a tooth root to be determined with precision during root canal treatment. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the success and quality of endodontic treatment.

How an apex locator works

An apex locator operates on the principle of electrical conductivity of tissues and resistance measurement. The device emits a low electrical current that passes through the tissues from the tip of the endodontic instrument inserted in the root canal to the apex of the root. By measuring the electrical resistance of the tissues, it is possible to determine the position of the apex and the appropriate working length.

The instrument generally consists of a base unit, a display screen and two electrical cables. One connected to a lip hook, positioned on the patient's lip, and the other to a "clip" which grips an endodontic file that can be inserted into the canal to measure the apical distance. The apex locator uses a microprocessor to analyse the electrical signals received and provide precise information on the position of the apex.

Advantages of using an apex locator

Using an apex locator offers several advantages in endodontics. It provides increased precision in determining the working length of the root canal, which is essential to avoid measurement errors, over-instrumentation and perforation of periapical tissues. It consequently helps to reduce the risk of post-operative complications and improves the success rate of endodontic treatments.

Furthermore, the apex locator allows optimal control of canal instrumentation and obturation, which contributes to a more effective and higher-quality treatment. Finally, it reduces the need for repeated radiographs to determine the working length of the canal.

Comparison with other measurement methods

The traditional method for measuring working length is radiography. It is still used, but has certain disadvantages that the apex locator does not. Radiography can produce a two-dimensional image and can be influenced by several factors such as:

  • the angle of view
  • superimposition of anatomical structures
  • image distortion

In contrast, the apex locator offers a more precise, real-time and radiation-free measurement method, making it the tool of choice for many practitioners. The French Society of Endodontics reports in a specific article on the differences in precision between the 2 techniques based on 21 studies conducted.

Integration of the apex locator into endodontic practice

Integrating an apex locator into endodontic practice requires adequate training and regular practice to ensure its optimal use. Practitioners must learn to correctly calibrate the device, interpret the information displayed and adapt their technique accordingly. Furthermore, it is important to understand the limitations of the device and not to rely on it exclusively, but to use it in conjunction with other diagnostic and control methods, such as radiography, to ensure a complete and successful treatment.

A valuable tool available at DFC Instruments

The apex locator is a valuable tool for endodontist practitioners, offering increased precision, better control of canal instrumentation and obturation, and a reduction in measurement errors. The adoption of the apex locator in endodontic practice can greatly contribute to improving the quality and efficiency of root canal treatments, for the benefit of patients and dental health professionals.

Coxo Apex Locator

The Coxo apex locator is designed to offer optimal precision when determining the working length during root canal treatments. It operates on the principle of electrical conductivity and resistance measurement to precisely locate the apex of the root. This apex locator is valued for its ease of use, precision and reliability. It is equipped with a rechargeable Li-Ion battery that charges in 3 hours.

The device consists of a base unit with a clear, tactile and easy-to-read display screen, providing real-time information on the position of the apex. It is also compact and ergonomic, with its 700g weight facilitating its integration into daily dental practice.

The Coxo apex locator is compatible with a variety of endodontic instruments, allowing practitioners to use it alongside their existing equipment. Furthermore, the device is designed to withstand the demanding conditions of dental practices, thus offering increased durability and longevity.
